There are a lot of useful resources out there on the web.  Here are a few of places that I have used in the past.  If you find another site that you have found that might be useful to share, please e-mail me with the information.

Family Search Org

One of my favorite sites, allows you to access many records in the huge archive in Salt Lake City, with many linked pedigree and family group sheets. Numerous family records submitted by people from all over the world, not just limited to the LDS Church.  Contacts are often listed for you to net work your genealogy research. Plus links to many other related records.

The US GenWeb Project

This site allows you to research either by the individual sate or county of your interest.  Each site varies in content but will always give you leads and places to write.  You can leave queries that are specific to the county at no cost.

US National Archives and Records Administration

Formally called NARA, the Archives are the Federal Government Repository for many types of records.  They have Military Service and Pension Files going back to the Revolutionary War to the World War II Soldiers Index, including Wacs.  Other branches of the service will be added later.  Many of their records are available at Regional Archives in your area.  Check this site often for new additions and on-line ordering for many types of records including military, ships passenger records, and homestead records. Be sure to check the “Genealogists/Family Historians” section.

Roots Web

A free site that has a huge list of indexes.  “US Town/County Database” allows you to type in the town and state and will give you the CURRENT county.  They also have the social security death index.  They have accessible lists and boards of others working on your various surnames and their e-mail addresses.

Gen Forum

This forum lists by surname and questions and answers from others working on those surnames.  You can check out the various spellings of your surnames.  Be sure to write down the e-mail address before you do a print out, as it will not be on the printout page.

Homestead Records

All states that offered homestead lands are searchable by your surname.  Be sure to check all people of that particular surname for other relatives.  Also check for the wife’s maiden name in case she had land in her own name.

Ellis Island

You can look for your immigrant ancestor on this site arriving after the year 1892.  Original ships passenger lists and pictures of the ships your family arrived on are also available. Free of charge.

ASK

My favorite site to ask a question and see what records or sources are available on-line.

Death Indexes

An on-line searchable Death Index and other Records, listed in alphabetic state order.  Some of these sites are free and others are paid subscriptions.
